Interlocking Step Installation Process
Improper interlocking step installation can cause the stones to shift, move, or sink over time. Here’s our process to ensure your interlocking steps are durable and long-lasting:
1
Measure and Level
Ensure the area supports the appropriate width and depth for the foundation of the steps.
2
Prepare the Base
For fewer than 4 steps, a gravel base may suffice.
For 4 or more steps, a concrete base is recommended.
3
Interlocking Steps Installation
Place your steps in the desired layout.
4
Finishing Touches
Install a railing or other finishing touches to complete your steps

How to Prevent Your Stone Steps from Sinking
The primary reason for steps sinking is an insufficient gravel base. To prevent this, ensure you have a minimum of six inches of gravel. If your current base falls short, excavation will be necessary. Additionally, installing geotextile is crucial to keep the soil and gravel from mixing.

The weight and number of steps also influence their stability:
Two Steps: Generally, a concrete base is not necessary.
Three Steps: A concrete base is recommended but may not be required, depending on specific conditions.
Four or More Steps: A concrete base is likely necessary, along with footings for additional reinforcement.

Footings are the foundation beneath the concrete, located about four feet below ground (the "frost line"). This placement prevents the ground from freezing beneath the foundation. If the foundation remains stable, the steps above will not sink, shift, or crack.
