To ensure your interlock driveway remains stable and doesn't sink, it's essential to have a sufficient gravel base. Without enough gravel, the project will fail. Follow these steps for a comprehensive driveway interlock guide:
Excavation:
If the existing gravel base is inadequate, perform a deep excavation to allow space for 12 inches of gravel and the stones' width.
Install Geotextile:
This textile acts as a filter, separating the old base materials (soil, sand, clay) from the new gravel base, preventing the gravel from mixing or sinking.
Install Gravel:
Place the gravel on top of the Geotextile layer.
Compaction:
Proper compaction is crucial. Use at least 500 pounds of weight to thoroughly compact the base.
Level the Ground with Bedding Material:
Use High-Performance Bedding (HPB), which is fully permeable and doesn't retain moisture, reducing the risk of expansion during winter.
Install Stones & Fill Gaps:
Set the stones in place and fill the gaps with polymeric sand. This sand acts as a glue, holding the stones together. After application, compact the sand so it settles into the gaps, then apply a second layer to fully seal the interlock and prevent shifting.
Say goodbye to shoveling snow and slipping on ice! Heated driveways use radiant heat flooring systems that can be installed both indoors and outdoors to melt snow and ice automatically. There are two main types of systems available:
  • Electric System
This system is cost-effective to install and requires minimal space. Thin, efficient electric cables are placed under your driveway, ensuring they don't occupy additional space or cause obstructions. However, this method takes slightly longer to heat up.

  • Hydraulic System
This closed system features tubes filled with water connected to a boiler. The boiler, which can range in size from 2' x 2' to 4.5' x 4.5', is typically located in the garage or basement. While the need for extra boiler space might be considered a drawback, this system is more efficient, heats up faster, and uses less gas, resulting in lower operating costs.

The Benefits of Adding a Border to Your Interlocking Driveway
An interlocking driveway enhances your home's curb appeal and value. To elevate it further, consider adding a border. Here are some benefits of adding a border to your interlocking driveway:
  • Aesthetics:
A well-designed border can make your driveway stand out, adding an extra touch of curb appeal. This can be particularly beneficial if you plan to sell your home, as a border can increase its market value.
  • Protection:
Borders protect your driveway from damage caused by snow plows, lawnmowers, and pets. By keeping these elements away from the edges, you can extend the lifespan of your driveway and maintain its appearance for years.
  • Easy Maintenance:
Borders simplify the maintenance of your interlocking driveway. They help prevent weed growth and soil erosion along the edges, reducing the amount of upkeep required.
